Current Project
Metro’s flagship project is the Bauxite Hills Mine (Mine), which is a single operating mine located 95 kilometres (km) north of Weipa in Western Cape York in Far North Queensland, with a total tenement package covering approximately 825km2.
The Mine has been operating since April 2018 and, as at 31 December 2024, has an estimated Reserve of 77.7 million tonnes (Mt) and a total Resource of 114.4Mt. Ore from the Mine is shipped to meet Asia Pacific’s growing bauxite market, where Cape York bauxite is well known and highly regarded. In addition to the Mine operations, Metro also has a portfolio of exploration projects in Cape York.
The Bauxite Hills Mine employs over 300 people and in 2022 exceeded its Traditional Owner employment target of 30% and maintained an indigenous workforce of 35%.
Simple Mining Operation
- Mining operations are undertaken only in the dry season, which is notionally an 9 month period from April to December.
- Free-dig bauxite is mined by front-end loaders, trucked to a port infrastructure area, screened to a max product size of 100mm and fed onto the Barge Loading Facility and into barges.
- Barges are towed down the Skardon River to an anchorage point at sea where the bauxite is transhipped to freight vessels.
