Executive General Manager Operations

Paul is a seasoned mining executive whose career started as a pumper in an underground coal mine. His experience spans surface and underground mines and large contracting businesses, greenfield and brownfield, which have involved Paul working with others to implement significant change to unlock the future potential of those businesses. Many of the learnings that he continues to apply in workplaces has been borne from working at the ‘coal face’.

Over a period of 30 years, Paul is proud to have worked for and played a significant role in:

• The restarting of the Rio Tinto Kestrel mine to achieve a lowest quartile safety performance and costs through highest quartile productivity.
• The revival of BHP’s Tower Colliery as GM/Project Director that was also recognised for its safety and production achievements by peers and recognised as a model site by environmental regulators.
• Idemitsu as GM OC & UG Operations positioning Ensham as one of the best bord and pillar operations in the world whilst reducing its TRIFR by 50% and achieving industry recognised rehabilitation outcomes, and as Managing Director, with a very short runway, successfully steering an ASX-listed mining contracting company out of insolvency.
• BHP as General Manager/ Project Director of Illawarra Coal’s Major expansion project – Douglas Project.
• Glencore as long term SSE role at Rolleston Open Cut Operations.
• Anglo American as General Manager of Moranbah North Operation and
• ASX-listed Metarock – as CEO Contracting and later as Managing Director.

During this same period, whilst in camp rooms and motels, and because you can only watch so many re-runs of ‘The Pirates of the Caribbean’, he has continued professional studies which includes – Mine Managers Certificate (2nd Class), MBA (Masters Business Administration), Graduate Diploma Psychology, Graduate Diploma Finance, SAI Exemplar Global Lead Auditor, GAICD (Graduate Australian Institute of Company Directors), IEC Coach Level 2 to complement his original Bachelor of Mining Engineering (Hons).
