Andy has over 30 years’ experience in the resources industry, having retired from Rio Tinto in July 2013. Whilst at Rio Tinto, he held a number of senior commercial, project development and board positions within the Rio Tinto group in Papua New Guinea, Australia, and the UK, variously in the copper, aluminium, coal and uranium businesses.

Andy is currently the independent Chair of Jabiru Kabolkmakmen Ltd (JKL), a not for profit development initiative of the Northern Territory Government and the Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation. JKL is working with the key stakeholders in Jabiru to implement the Mirarr’s Masterplan to transition the town from a mining economy to tourism and services.

Until January 2021 Andy was a director of Developing East Arnhem Ltd (DEAL). DEAL is an economic development company formed by the Northern Territory Government and Rio Tinto Alcan in 2014 at the time that Rio Tinto placed the alumina refinery on care and maintenance. Over the past five years it has been successful in rebuilding the business confidence in the town of Nhulunbuy, and supporting economic development in the East Arnhem region.

At Rio Tinto, Andy was a senior executive member of the Energy product group with responsibility for investment planning and analysis. He has significant project experience in Australia and overseas, having worked on site in PNG with Bougainville Copper prior to its closure in 1989, Comalco in Bell Bay, and at Gove for Nabalco at it’s bauxite mine and alumina refinery. Andy led the Kintyre project for Rio Tinto until its sale in 2008, including the negotiations with the Traditional Owners the Martu of the Western Desert.

He has served on the boards of Energy Resources of Australia, Coal and Allied Industries, Rössing Uranium Ltd in Namibia, and Kennecott Energy in the US.

Andy has degrees in science and commerce, and extensive experience in adding value to mining projects, corporate governance, and in dealing with governments. He lives in Melbourne, is married with three adult children, and is a volunteer firefighter with the Acheron CFA
